The race for generative AI heats up this month with Apple launching new AI features for its iPhone. On June 10th, Apple formally introduced Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system for its iPhone, Mac, and iPad that blends generative models with personal context to offer relevant intelligence to users. By partnering with OpenAI, users can now enjoy ChatGPT on their iPhone and Mac OS.

Apple took the next step in developing its iPhone, iPad, and Mac OS by embracing generative AI through its Apple Intelligence. The official announcement was made last Monday at the Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, made the formal announcement, sharing a list of generative AI products and services that will be integrated into its line-up of devices and OS. He also highlighted Apple's deal with ChatGPT's maker, OpenAI, which added to the buzz. Sam Altman, the person behind OpenAI, was also in attendance.

The new AI tools, which the company calls Apple Intelligence, suggest a shift in marketing for the tech company, which has seen slow sales over the past year and is running catch up to its competitors with substantial investments in AI. Apple is betting on this series of AI investments to provide users with tools to accelerate everyday tasks.

In a press release, Cook expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter in Apple innovation. He said, "Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products and what our products can do for our users."

He added that the company's unique approach combines generative AI with the user's personal context to offer a truly helpful intelligence. Apple's Cook also addressed many concerns regarding potential security and data privacy, saying that its Apple Intelligence can access information privately and securely.

Apple Intelligence: Expect new capabilities for personalized writing and communications

Tất tần tật những gì cần biết về Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence aims to provide users with tools and technology to improve writing and communication. For starters, there are the systemwide Writing Tools integrated into iOS 18, iPad OS 19, and macOS Sequoia, which allow users to rewrite, summarize, and proofread texts anywhere, including Pages, Notes, Mail, and even third-party apps. Apple's Writing Tools can help users become more confident in their writing and communications.

For example, Rewrite allows users to compare and choose from different versions of their writing and adjust its tone to meet their specific purpose and audience.

Proofread is the go-to feature for checking word choice, grammar, and sentence structure, and it can also suggest edits that users can review or immediately accept.

Finally, the Summarize feature lets users select specific text and have it recapped as a table, list, or bulleted key points.

Communications become more efficient using Apple Intelligence. In Mail, users can now easily manage their emails and contacts. There's a new section called Priority Messages, which you can find at the top of the inbox and displays the most urgent messages. If you check the inbox, you no longer just get a preview of the emails; you'll get summaries without opening the message.

Also, there's an option to use Smart Reply, which you can find at the top of the inbox and powered by Apple Intelligence, which promises to deliver natural, more contextually relevant, and personal answers and assist in simplifying displays of the most urgent messages. Siri gets an update, iPhone to integrate ChatGPT

Apple also announced that Siri is getting an update. Siri is Apple's digital assistant that's integrated into all its OS, and it uses voice queries, gesture-based control, and focus tracking to answer questions. Today, Siri is powered by Apple Intelligence, which promises to deliver natural, more contextually relevant, personal answers and simplify user tasks. According to Apple, the updated Siri can follow if a user stumbles over words and maintains context from one context to the next. Additionally, Siri can easily switch between voice and text to complete communications.

Perhaps the biggest announcement from Monday's launch is the plan to integrate ChatGPT across Apple platforms. Since its release last September 2022, OpenAI's CHatGPT quickly went viral for its exciting use cases. Users reported using the app for planning, writing, and computer programming. ChatGPT has attracted over a million users within five days of its release. Apple has announced that it will integrate the technology within iOS 18, iPad OS 18, and macOS Sequoia. By adding ChatGPT to the iPhone, the chatbot can write iMessage and answer the generative prompts.

Market reacts to Apple Intelligence

Following the debut of Apple Intelligence last Monday, the company's stock price soared to a record level, closing at $207.15 last Tuesday. This was a dramatic improvement from what happened Monday when the stock fell 1.9% on the first day of the conference, where investors are still clueless about what will happen to the company moving forward.

Apple's stock price rise reflects the market's positive appreciation of the latest products, including Apple Intelligence. Apple officially joins the AI industry by integrating machine learning and generative AI into its products. Experts and analysts are also bullish about Apple's AI since it requires the power of the Apple Silicon chips primarily made for the A17 Pro for the iPhone. This means the chips are compatible with Macs manufactured after late 2020, such as the iPhone 15 Pro and future iPhone models.

After the successful launch of Apple Intelligence and the promised integration of ChatGPT, Apple's market cap is now approximately $31.18 trillion, Microsoft at $3.22 trillion, and Nvidia at $2.97 trillion.

Musk reacts to Apple Intelligence, Apple and OpenAI collab

Apple's launching of Apple Intelligence and other AI-related products and partnerships is one of the biggest stories in tech this week. The market responded positively, with Apple's stock price hitting record levels immediately after the announcement.

However, not everyone was happy and satisfied with the announcement, specifically Apple's collaboration with OpenAI. Elon Musk, owner of Tesla and X, formerly Twitter, shared his disappointment with Apple's recent move. The tech leader used X to rant about Apple Intelligence and even said that if Apple decides to integrate OpenAI at the OS level, he will ban all Apple devices from his companies, calling it "an unacceptable security violation." Musk condemned the Apple and OpenAI partnership, focusing on how it will impact privacy and security.

In one of the posts, Musk wrote, "Apple has no clue what's actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI." He added, "They're (Apple) selling you down the river." Then, Musk directed his criticism to Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, saying, "Either stop this creepy spyware, or all Apple devices will be banned from the premises of my companies."

Musk's tirades against Apple, OpenAI, and the newly launched Apple Intelligence add to growing competition and other storylines in the AI space. Generative AI is no longer just a tech catchword but a technology with plenty of applications and use cases, and companies are racing to develop the best products. Many speculate that Musk's outbursts may be related to his own plans for AI across his platforms, including Grok and the development of his startup, xAI. This isn't the first time that the polarizing tech CEO has picked fights with OpenAI. In March, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI.
